The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the highest form of prayer and the graces that flow from it are infinite. A Mass intention is a specific petition for which a Mass is offered and is a powerful way to pray for or intercede on behalf of others. 

Mass is most commonly offered for the repose of the soul of a deceased person, however, Mass can also be offered for a living person, e.g. for healing when sick or on a birthday or anniversary.
